FCT Primary School Pupils Forced to Learn Without Desks in Gwagwalada Despite UBEC Funding
Gwagwalada, FCT, Nigeria — Pupils at LEA Primary School, Dupka, in Ibwa Ward, Gwagwalada Area Council, are reportedly learning without desks or chairs, sitting on bare floors in overcrowded classrooms, despite billions of naira released by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to improve primary education facilities.
MonITng, a local education advocacy group, raised concerns over the poor learning environment, highlighting that classrooms are overcrowded, poorly ventilated, and lack basic instructional materials, making it difficult for teachers to provide quality education.
Residents and education activists have criticised local government authorities for allegedly prioritising other interests over school development, including donating vehicles to political supporters instead of addressing critical school needs.
The advocacy group is calling on FCT authorities, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, and Senator Ireti Kingibe, to urgently intervene and ensure pupils receive proper school furniture and learning resources to meet acceptable educational standards.
