Nasarawa Government Spends ₦707m on Refreshments as Rural Water Supply Suffers Neglect

Spending priorities spark outrage as communities lack access to clean water across Nasarawa State

The Nasarawa State Government has come under criticism following reports that it spent about ₦707 million on refreshments and meals while rural communities across the state continue to face severe challenges accessing clean and potable water.

Budget performance documents reportedly show that the expenditure on refreshments was incurred between January and September 2025, surpassing funds released for rural water projects within the same period. In contrast, the Nasarawa State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) received only about ₦300.5 million in capital funding, raising concerns over spending priorities.

Residents in several rural areas have lamented the persistent water shortage, noting that many communities still depend on unsafe water sources. Some locals reportedly described access to water as extremely difficult, with even water vendors struggling to source water for sale.

The development has reignited public debate over governance and fiscal responsibility in the state, as critics question why administrative and hospitality expenses appear to outweigh investment in basic amenities such as clean water and sanitation for rural dwellers.
