House of Representatives Advances N58.47 Trillion 2026 Budget for Detailed Legislative Review
Nigeria’s House of Representatives has passed a budget of N58.47 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill for second reading, marking a major step forward in the national budget approval process. The development moves the proposal closer to final legislative consideration as lawmakers begin detailed committee scrutiny of allocations and spending priorities.
The 2026 budget, presented by the Federal Government as part of efforts to consolidate economic reforms and strengthen national resilience, outlines plans to boost spending in critical sectors including security, infrastructure, healthcare and education. Lawmakers during debate noted the need for sustained investment to stabilize the economy and improve service delivery across the country.
With projected revenue estimated at about N34.33 trillion against total expenditure of N58.47 trillion, the proposal indicates a significant deficit that will require financing through borrowing and other fiscal measures. Government officials, however, maintain that the spending plan is designed to stimulate growth, support development projects and strengthen economic recovery efforts.
For Abuja and the wider Federal Capital Territory, implementation of the budget is expected to influence infrastructure development, public service delivery and federal government projects located within the capital city. Ministries, departments and agencies headquartered in Abuja play a central role in executing national spending plans, making the capital a focal point of budget impact.
Following the second reading, the bill will now move to relevant committees of the House for detailed examination before returning for third reading and eventual harmonization with the Senate version ahead of presidential assent. Observers will be watching closely as lawmakers fine tune allocations that will shape Nigeria’s economic direction in 2026.
