Security Forces Launch Manhunt as Governor Alia Condemns Renewed Violence in Kwande LGA
Armed bandits on Tuesday launched a deadly attack on Abande community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, killing a police superintendent and four residents, in another incident highlighting the worsening security situation in parts of the North Central region.
The slain officer, a Special Duty Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the 13 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Makurdi, was reportedly ambushed during a confrontation with the attackers. Community sources said the gunmen stormed the area in large numbers, shooting sporadically and causing panic among residents before fleeing.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the attack, stating that security operatives have been deployed to the affected community and surrounding areas to restore calm and track down the perpetrators. Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and possible security lapses.
Reacting to the incident, Governor Hyacinth Alia strongly condemned the killings and ordered an immediate manhunt for those responsible, assuring residents that the state government would work closely with security agencies to prevent further attacks.
The attack has deepened fears among rural communities in Benue State, where repeated incidents of banditry and armed violence have disrupted farming activities and displaced residents. Local leaders and residents are calling on the federal and state governments to strengthen security presence and protect vulnerable communities from further assaults.
