Dispute Deepens as ICPC Maintains Claims of Sensitive Devices Recovered from Former Kaduna Governor’s Residence

The family of former Kaduna State Governor, , has strongly refuted claims by the (ICPC) that wiretapping equipment was discovered during a recent search of his residence in Abuja.

The development follows reports that ICPC operatives executed a search warrant at El-Rufai’s home in the Federal Capital Territory as part of an ongoing investigation. According to the anti-graft agency, items allegedly recovered included communication devices and documents described as sensitive security materials.

However, in a swift reaction, the El-Rufai family dismissed the allegations as false and misleading. In a statement attributed to his son, , the family maintained that no wiretapping or surveillance equipment was found in the Abuja residence. They insisted that only personal belongings such as phones, laptops and storage devices were taken during the search.

The family further described the ICPC’s claims as politically motivated, accusing the commission of attempting to tarnish the former governor’s reputation through what they termed a “media trial.” They argued that the items seized were ordinary household devices and not specialized surveillance tools.

In addition, the former governor is said to have challenged the legality of the search warrant in court, questioning the basis upon which the operation was conducted. Legal representatives reportedly contend that the search violated constitutional rights and due process.

The ICPC has yet to issue a fresh clarification in response to the family’s denial, but the matter is expected to unfold in court as both sides prepare to defend their positions.

The controversy adds another layer to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding El-Rufai, who has remained a prominent political figure in national discourse since leaving office. Observers say the legal proceedings will ultimately determine the validity of the allegations and counterclaims.

As the situation develops, Abuja residents and political stakeholders are closely watching the unfolding legal battle between the former governor and Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency.
