ADC Diaspora Protests in London, Petitions UK Parliament Over Alleged One-Party Agenda in Nigeria

Group raises concerns over democracy, calls for INEC chairman’s resignation

Members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the diaspora have taken their grievances to the United Kingdom Parliament, submitting a protest petition over what they described as growing threats to Nigeria’s democracy.

The protest, which took place in London, saw ADC supporters accuse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of allegedly steering the country toward a one-party system. According to the group, opposition parties are increasingly being sidelined while democratic institutions are being weakened.

In their petition, the protesters urged the UK government and the international community to pay closer attention to political developments in Nigeria, warning that the situation could undermine democratic stability if left unchecked.

They further called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, alleging bias in the management and oversight of the country’s electoral processes.

The group maintained that safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy requires strong, independent institutions and a level playing field for all political actors, stressing the need for credible elections ahead of future polls.

The development adds to ongoing political discourse around governance, electoral integrity, and opposition space in Nigeria as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.
