Party adopts single four-year tenure arrangement as delegates endorse power rotation formula at Abuja convention

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, declaring that the candidate who emerges under the platform would serve only a single four-year term before power returns to the North in 2031.

The resolution was reached during the party’s maiden National Convention held in Abuja on Saturday, where delegates overwhelmingly endorsed the zoning arrangement as part of efforts to promote fairness, equity and national balance within the party structure.

According to party leaders, the decision was a product of extensive consultations among stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones, with the arrangement aimed at strengthening unity and internal stability ahead of the 2027 general election.

The motion for the zoning formula was reportedly moved by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, and received wide acceptance from delegates at the convention.

Under the adopted framework, the South will produce the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election on the understanding that the tenure would last for only one term of four years, after which the ticket would automatically be ceded to Northern Nigeria in 2031.

Political observers believe the development could reshape opposition politics ahead of 2027, especially amid ongoing coalition talks and strategic alignments among key political actors across the country.

Party officials maintained that the zoning arrangement reflects the NDC’s commitment to inclusive leadership, rotational governance and the preservation of national cohesion.
