New policy aims to promote local textile production, modernise the NYSC scheme and enhance corps members’ experience nationwide.
The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the traditional khaki uniform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with an Adire-themed uniform as part of a comprehensive reform package approved for the scheme.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, confirmed the development, stating that the move is designed to promote locally made products and support Nigeria’s textile industry. According to the minister, Adire fabrics produced in states such as Ogun and Kwara will be utilised for the new uniforms, creating opportunities for local manufacturers and artisans.
The proposed uniform change forms part of a broader restructuring of the NYSC aimed at making the scheme more relevant to current realities and better equipped to meet the needs of Nigerian youths.
Other key reforms approved by the Federal Government include a technology-driven call-up process, skills-based deployment of corps members according to their academic disciplines, risk-sensitive postings to address security concerns, and a redesigned six-week orientation programme focused on leadership, entrepreneurship and digital skills.
The reforms also propose a new graduation ceremony to replace the traditional Passing Out Parade and introduce civilian operational leadership for the scheme while retaining military support for security and orientation activities.
Olawande dismissed reports suggesting that the military would be completely removed from the NYSC structure, clarifying that the reforms are intended to modernise the scheme without compromising the safety and security of corps members.
Established in 1973, the NYSC has remained one of Nigeria’s most significant youth programmes, promoting national unity and integration among graduates from different parts of the country. The latest reforms represent one of the most far-reaching changes in the history of the scheme and are expected to reshape the future of national service in Nigeria.
