NUT directs primary and secondary school teachers across the FCT to stay away from classrooms from Wednesday, October 7, 2026, pending further directives.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, has directed all primary and secondary school teachers across the Federal Capital Territory to commence an indefinite strike from Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
The directive followed a meeting of the State Executive Council (SEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, which reviewed the seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to the FCT Minister over unresolved issues affecting teachers and education administrators.
The concerns include the use of a vacancy clause as a condition for teachers’ promotion, the 2025 promotion examination for eligible teachers, and the redeployment or demotion of Directors.
According to the NUT notice, the NLC FCT SEC considered the response from the FCT Administration to be ambiguous and unsatisfactory after extensive deliberations.
Consequently, the council resolved that workers across the FCT should proceed on an indefinite strike beginning Wednesday, October 7.
The NUT FCT Wing has therefore instructed teachers in primary and secondary schools to stay at home and await further directives.
The union described the message as an advance notice, adding that the official communiqué and press statement from the council would be released subsequently.
Teachers and other affected workers are advised to await the official communication for further details on the industrial action and subsequent developments.
