Reno Omokri ambassadorial screening

The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs witnessed a dramatic exchange on Thursday as Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Ali Ndume clashed sharply over the ambassadorial nomination of former presidential aide, Reno Omokri.

The altercation broke out during the ongoing ambassadorial screening exercise, where Omokri appeared before lawmakers alongside other nominees submitted by President Bola Tinubu for confirmation.

Ndume Moves for ‘Take a Bow’, Oshiomhole Rejects

Trouble began when Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) proposed that Omokri and other nominees be allowed to “take a bow and go”—a long-standing tradition in the National Assembly that allows known personalities to skip detailed questioning.

Ndume praised Omokri’s credentials and said he had known him for years, urging the committee to expedite the process.

But Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North) strongly objected, insisting lawmakers must comment on nominees and thoroughly scrutinize them, especially those with public controversies.

Heated Exchange in the Senate

The disagreement quickly escalated into a verbal confrontation:

  • Ndume reportedly called Oshiomhole a “tout.”
  • Oshiomhole fired back, saying he would not engage a “hypocrite.”

Other senators intervened to restore calm as tensions momentarily disrupted the screening session.

Why Reno Omokri’s Nomination Is Generating Controversy

Reno Omokri’s appointment has drawn significant debate within political and civil society circles. Several groups and individuals have expressed concerns over:

  • His past confrontational criticisms of President Tinubu, especially during the 2023 elections.
  • Allegations that ambassadorial appointments are being used to reward political allies.
  • Prevailing petitions and public objections regarding his suitability for Nigeria’s diplomatic representation.

Despite the criticisms, supporters argue that Omokri is well-versed in international relations and global advocacy.

Background on Ambassadorial Appointments

President Tinubu recently forwarded 65 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate, with screening currently ongoing. Sources indicate that Omokri and other high-profile nominees—such as Femi Fani-Kayode—have made notable public appearances at the committee sessions.

The heated exchange between Oshiomhole and Ndume underscores growing tensions around key political appointments and the need for transparent vetting processes. As the Senate continues its screening, all eyes remain on whether Reno Omokri will ultimately secure confirmation as a Nigerian ambassador.
