Bandits Attack Sparks Fresh Security Concerns in Northwest Nigeria

In a shocking violation of recently brokered peace agreements, armed bandits attacked the Unguwar Daudu community in Funtua Local Government Area, Katsina State, on the night of January 4, 2026, abducting at least 20 residents and leaving several injured.

According to local officials and eyewitnesses, the assailants stormed the village shortly after nightfall, opening fire and creating panic among villagers. Two residents were reportedly wounded during the raid, while dozens of families have been thrown into uncertainty following the mass abduction.

This attack comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize security in Katsina, where several peace deals with bandit groups were recently signed. Sources revealed that the raid occurred despite these agreements, raising critical questions about the durability of the pacts and the safety of rural communities.

Security forces — including military and police units — were deployed immediately to pursue the kidnappers and secure escape routes. Search operations are ongoing as authorities attempt to rescue the abducted villagers and restore calm to the area.

Villagers have appealed to both state and federal governments to reinforce security in Katsina’s rural areas, where repeated bandit attacks have caused widespread fear, displacement, and loss of livelihoods. Community members expressed frustration that peace accords have yet to translate into lasting safety.

  • Katsina State remains one of the most volatile regions in northwest Nigeria, with frequent kidnappings and raids reported in recent years.
  • The violation of peace agreements highlights the continued challenge of reintegrating armed groups and securing rural communities.
  • The incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and more effective strategies to protect vulnerable populations.
