“Ex-AGF Abubakar Malami, Son Remanded in Kuje Prison as Court Sets January 2 for Bail Hearing Over Alleged Financial Crimes”
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has remanded former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), alongside his son, in the Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the determination of their bail applications.
The ruling was delivered on Monday by Justice Emeka Nwite, following the arraignment of Malami, his son Abdulaziz Abubakar Malami, and a co-defendant by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Court Fixes January 2 For Bail Hearing
Justice Nwite adjourned the matter to January 2, 2026, for the hearing and ruling on the bail applications filed by the defendants. The court held that the defendants should be remanded to allow the prosecution adequate time to respond to the bail requests.
According to the judge, granting bail without hearing from the prosecution would amount to procedural ambush and could undermine the interest of justice.
EFCC Arraigns Malami Over Alleged Financial Crimes
The EFCC had arraigned the former Attorney-General and others on a 16-count charge, bordering on alleged money laundering, conspiracy, and unlawful acquisition of assets.
During the proceedings, all the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges read before the court.
