Abuja, Nigeria — Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, is dead. He reportedly passed away on Tuesday while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, sparking nationwide mourning across legal, political, and religious circles.

Sources close to the family confirmed the death of the former head of Nigeria’s judiciary, while the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) also issued a condolence message, describing his passing as a “monumental loss” to the nation.
According to the association, Justice Muhammad died after battling health challenges, which had earlier forced him to resign in June 2022.
A Distinguished Judicial Career
Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad was appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria in January 2019, following the suspension of his predecessor. Before his elevation, he served as a Justice of the Supreme Court, earning a reputation for judicial discipline and adherence to the rule of law.
