INEC Releases Fresh Election Timeline as Countdown to 2027 Polls Intensifies

Abuja, Nigeria — S (INEC) has announced a new set of compulsory timelines ahead of the 2027 general elections, triggering early political realignments across the country.

According to INEC, all political parties must conduct their primary elections in July 2026, a move designed to ensure adequate preparation and strict adherence to the electoral calendar. The Commission also directed that any individual intending to contest any political position in the 2027 elections must resign from their current government office by February 2026.

The Independent National Electoral Commission stated that the timelines are in line with constitutional provisions and necessary to maintain an orderly and transparent electoral process.

With the new schedule, it is now officially seven months to the party primary elections for the 2027 polls, signaling the beginning of intense political activities as aspirants and parties begin groundwork.

Political analysts say the directive from the Independent National Electoral Commission serves as a strong reminder to officeholders eyeing elective positions to comply early to avoid disqualification.

More updates from INEC and responses from political parties are expected in the coming days.
