Former Anambra Governor Warns Against Election Rigging, Calls For Credible Polls
Enugu, Nigeria — Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside other prominent South-East political leaders, marking a major realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in Enugu State, where Obi and his allies formally declared their membership of the ADC, a move widely seen as part of efforts to build a united opposition coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the event, Obi said Nigeria’s persistent challenges — including insecurity, unemployment, widespread poverty and weak institutions — are a result of poor leadership, not the absence of resources. He stressed that the country urgently needs leaders committed to accountability, competence and people-centred governance.
The former Anambra State governor also warned against any attempt to manipulate the 2027 elections, insisting that Nigerians are determined to defend democracy and demand credible polls.
Obi called on members of the Obidient Movement and other opposition supporters to rally behind the ADC, describing the party as a platform for building a new, inclusive and productive Nigeria. He emphasised the need for unity among opposition forces to successfully challenge the APC at the national level.
Political observers say Obi’s move to the ADC could significantly reshape Nigeria’s opposition politics, particularly in the South-East, as preparations for the next general election begin to gather momentum.
