Leadership Shake-Up in Nigeria Police Force as President Tinubu appoint Tunji Disu Successor Amid Tenure Controversy and Reform Expectations
President Bola Tinubu has reportedly removed Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in a significant leadership shake-up within the Nigeria Police Force.
Multiple sources indicate that the President directed Egbetokun to hand over as part of an immediate transition process, although an official statement from the Presidency or the Police Headquarters was still being awaited at the time of filing this report.
Senior police sources also disclosed that Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, is expected to take over as the new Inspector-General of Police. Disu, a seasoned officer with extensive operational and investigative experience, has previously headed key formations within the force.
Egbetokun’s tenure had generated public debate in recent months, particularly over issues surrounding statutory retirement age and the interpretation of provisions in the Police Act regarding the fixed tenure of an Inspector-General. Civil society groups and legal stakeholders had raised concerns, calling for clarity and institutional reforms within the force.
The reported removal marks a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s security architecture, as stakeholders anticipate possible policy shifts and renewed efforts toward police reform, accountability and improved public trust.
As Nigerians await formal confirmation, attention now turns to the incoming leadership and the direction the Nigeria Police Force will take in addressing pressing security challenges across the country.
