Super Eagles Halt Training, Threaten Match Boycott Over Unpaid AFCON Allowances

Fresh controversy has hit Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign as players of the Super Eagles have threatened to boycott their quarter-final clash against Algeria over alleged unpaid match bonuses and allowances.

According to reports, the players are protesting the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)’s failure to settle outstanding entitlements for matches already played at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco

Sources close to the team revealed that the Super Eagles have boycotted training sessions and are also threatening to refuse to travel to Marrakech, where the crucial match against Algeria is scheduled to take place.

The players are reportedly owed bonuses for at least four matches, including Nigeria’s victories in the group stage and the round of 16.

“We will not train or travel unless our bonuses are paid,” a team source was quoted as saying.

The development has raised serious concerns about Nigeria’s participation in the quarter-final, with football stakeholders warning that a boycott could lead to sanctions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and possible elimination from the tournament.

This situation also threatens to derail Nigeria’s impressive run at AFCON 2025, where the Super Eagles have emerged as one of the tournament’s strong contenders.

This is not the first time Nigeria’s national team has been embroiled in disputes over unpaid bonuses. Similar issues have plagued previous international tournaments, drawing criticism from fans and sports analysts who accuse football authorities of mismanagement and neglect of players’ welfare.

Many Nigerians have taken to social media to express frustration, urging the Federal Government and the NFF to urgently intervene to avoid national embarrassment.

As the countdown to the Algeria match continues, pressure is mounting on the NFF to resolve the payment crisis swiftly and restore focus within the camp.

Failure to do so could result in one of Nigeria’s most controversial moments in AFCON history.
