Civil society group petitions FCT Police Command over alleged violence, unlawful arrests, and extortion by Bwari divisional police officers
Bwari DPO: A civil society organisation, Springs Aid Foundation, has petitioned the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command to investigate CSP Babayola Muhammad Musa, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bwari, over alleged abuse of office, extortion, and unlawful use of force against residents in Abuja.
The petition, filed on behalf of residents including Thompson Edeh, Abraham Emmanuel, and Chidiebere Ogenyi, claims that on December 31, 2025, CSP Babayola and officers under his command conducted a violent operation, reportedly firing live ammunition into the air, deploying tear gas without provocation, and detaining more than 90 people, including churchgoers, business owners, and a serving NYSC member.
Some victims allegedly suffered serious injuries. Abraham Emmanuel reportedly lost an eye after being hit by a tear gas canister, while others were beaten and coerced into paying large sums for bail. The petition also alleges that CSP Babayola routinely harasses civilians, brands youths as internet fraudsters, and exploits his office for personal gain.
The group has called for an impartial investigation and criminal accountability for the DPO, claiming to have video evidence of the incidents. While the FCT Police Command has summoned both the DPO and the alleged victims, no official statement has been issued.
This case underscores concerns about police misconduct in Abuja and highlights the need to protect citizens’ rights in the FCT.
