African football body CAF sanctions Algerian FA and players after heated AFCON clash, vows zero tolerance for misconduct and post-match disorder
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a $100,000 fine on the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and handed down match bans to two Algerian players following violent incidents that marred Algeria’s AFCON clash against Nigeria.
The sanctions stem from disorderly conduct during and after the heated encounter, which Confederation of African Football said breached its disciplinary and security regulations. According to the governing body, the behaviour of some Algerian players and officials, as well as failures in controlling post-match tensions, amounted to serious misconduct.
As part of the ruling, Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane was suspended for two matches, while defender Rafik Belghali received a four-match ban, with parts of the suspension to be served during upcoming AFCON qualifying fixtures. CAF clarified that the bans would not affect Algeria’s participation in FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Confederation of African Footballstated that the $100,000 fine reflects multiple violations, including unsporting behaviour, failure to ensure discipline, and actions that brought the game into disrepute. The body emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on violence and intimidation, particularly in high-profile continental competitions.
Reacting to the decision, the Algerian Football Federation indicated plans to appeal the sanctions, arguing that the punishments were excessive. However, CAF maintained that the measures were necessary to uphold discipline, protect match officials, and preserve the integrity of African football.
The incident has reignited discussions around player conduct, officiating protection, and security standards at AFCON tournaments, with CAF reiterating its commitment to enforcing strict disciplinary measures against any form of violence or misconduct.
