African football body CAF condemns post-match incidents, refers officials, players and media conduct to disciplinary panel
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an official investigation into alleged misconduct that marred the AFCON 2025 quarter-final matches between Nigeria and Algeria, as well as Cameroon and Morocco.
In a statement released on Sunday, Confederation of African Football confirmed that it had reviewed match officials’ reports and video evidence from both encounters and subsequently referred the incidents to its Disciplinary Board for further action.
According to Confederation of African Football, the investigation covers unacceptable behaviour involving players, team officials and media representatives, particularly actions directed at match officials and referees following the highly charged fixtures.
Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 to secure a semi-final spot, but tensions escalated immediately after the final whistle. Several Algerian players and officials were reported to have confronted match officials, leading to heated scenes on the pitch.
CAF noted that the conduct displayed after the match fell short of the expected standards of professionalism, prompting disciplinary review. The Algerian Football Federation is also said to have raised concerns over officiating decisions during the game.
The quarter-final clash between Cameroon and Morocco, which ended in a 2-0 victory for Morocco, also came under scrutiny following complaints related to refereeing decisions, including disputed penalty calls.
CAF confirmed that incidents from the match are part of the ongoing investigation.
CAF strongly condemned the misconduct, reiterating its zero-tolerance policy for actions that undermine the integrity of African football.
“CAF condemns all forms of inappropriate behaviour and will take necessary disciplinary measures against individuals found guilty,” the football body said.
The CAF Disciplinary Board is expected to determine appropriate sanctions, which may include fines, suspensions, or further punitive measures, once investigations are concluded.
The development comes amid growing scrutiny over refereeing standards and post-match conduct at the ongoing AFCON 2025 tournament.
