Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) has dismissed a surgeon following allegations of secretly removing a patient’s kidney without consent, a case that has sparked outrage across Nigeria and raised concerns over medical ethics and patient safety.

The development was confirmed after a seven-member panel of inquiry set up by the Ekiti State Government found the surgeon culpable in the controversial operation involving patient Joshua Afolayan, who alleged that his kidney was removed without his authorization during surgery.

According to Sahara Reporters, the surgeon was dismissed immediately, while other members of the surgical team involved in the procedure were suspended for one month pending further investigations.

Ekiti State authorities announced plans to:

  • Fund a new kidney transplant for the patient
  • Cover post-transplant care and medication for two years
  • Implement strict reforms to strengthen clinical governance and accountability at the hospital

The incident has triggered public shock and strong calls for criminal prosecution of the surgeon. Many Nigerians have described the case as one of the most disturbing hospital scandals in recent times.

Authorities emphasized that the state remains committed to protecting patients’ rights and restoring public confidence in the healthcare system.

The case continues to generate debate on medical standards, patient consent, and the need for stronger regulatory frameworks in Nigerian hospitals.
