INEC to investigate officials over logistical lapses during FCT Area Council elections, warns of sanctions

The Chairman of the Independent national electoral commission (INEC) Prof. Amupitan has vowed to investigate electoral officials responsible for reported shortfalls in Kuje and Kabusa during the recently concluded Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

Amupitan made this known during a review meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at INEC headquarters in Abuja, where the commission assessed the conduct of the FCT polls. He expressed concern over logistical lapses that affected voting processes in parts of Kuje Area Council and Kabusa, stressing that accountability would be enforced.

According to the INEC chairman, any staff found culpable for delays in the deployment of election materials or other administrative shortcomings would face disciplinary action in line with the commission’s guidelines. He also warned that transporters contracted for the movement of sensitive and non-sensitive materials who failed to meet their obligations could be sanctioned or blacklisted.

While noting that the elections were largely peaceful across the FCT, the commission admitted that isolated operational challenges were recorded. Amupitan emphasized the need for a thorough probe to protect the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.

He assured residents of Kuje, Kabusa, and the wider FCT that corrective measures would be implemented to prevent a recurrence, adding that lessons from the exercise would inform preparations for future elections, including the 2027 general polls.
