FCTA Replaced Spoilt Security Outpost Umbrella After Contractors’ Gesture Was Rejected Over Fear of Sanctions
Abuja — The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) only replaced the badly damaged umbrella at the security outpost of the FCTA Minister’s gate after an intervention by FCT indigenous contractors, it has emerged.

The umbrella, which had been torn and severely battered by prolonged exposure to the sun, reportedly remained in use for a long time without replacement by the FCTA. The situation caught the attention of FCT indigenous contractors who were at the premises to protest the administration’s alleged failure to settle outstanding contractual payments.

Moved by the poor condition of the security post, the contractors reportedly purchased a brand-new umbrella and offered it to the security personnel on duty. However, the officers declined to accept the gift, citing fear of disciplinary action or possible dismissal by their superiors for receiving a gift from contractors who were at the premises on protest.
Eyewitnesses said the security personnel insisted that accepting the umbrella could be misconstrued as compromise or inducement, despite the humanitarian intention behind the gesture.
Shortly after the incident drew attention, the FCTA eventually replaced the damaged umbrella at the security outpost.
The development has raised concerns among observers, who questioned why such a basic facility for officers at a sensitive government location was neglected until contractors stepped in.
