The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced plans to construct Nigeria’s first underground rail line in Abuja. This rail line will be eight meters deep and will connect the Abuja Metro Station with the Central Business District (CBD) Bus Terminal. The project was unveiled by the Mandate Secretary of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Elechi, during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the CBD Bus/Taxi Terminal.
The rail line is a significant part of the FCTA’s strategy to enhance public transportation within the city. It will facilitate intermodal transfers, allowing commuters to seamlessly move from the underground rail to the bus and taxi services above ground. The rail will run underground between two buildings near the Eagle Square area, providing a direct and efficient connection to the CBD.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike emphasized that this development is aimed at improving the overall transport infrastructure in Abuja, reducing traffic congestion, and enhancing commuter safety by cutting down on “one-chance” crimes. The initiative is expected to ease travel within the city, reduce stress for commuters, and lower vehicle-related costs.
