Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is currently indisposed and receiving medical attention, according to official statements from the Presidency.
Contrary to earlier online reports claiming the minister suffered a stroke and was flown abroad, Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga clarified that Edun is “recuperating at home” in Abuja after a brief illness.
Onanuga, in a statement released on Sunday, dismissed rumours of any replacement plans for the finance minister, saying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains focused on economic recovery efforts and stands firmly behind Edun.
“The Honourable Minister is unwell but recovering. He has not been flown abroad. Reports suggesting a replacement are false and speculative,” Onanuga stated.
Due to his indisposition, Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, will represent Nigeria at the 2025 IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Morocco on behalf of the finance minister.
The Ministry of Finance has not disclosed further details about the nature of Edun’s illness but reassured Nigerians that he is stable and expected to return to duty soon.
