“Following Presidential Mandate, Wike Expands FCT Roads with Solar Lighting, Aims for 95% Traffic Cut”

Theophilus Noah Baba November 7, 2024
Nyesom-Wike

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike announced a mandate from the President to expand and enhance road infrastructure throughout the Federal Capital Territory, including both central areas and satellite towns. During an inspection of the Outer Southern Expressway’s second phase—from Ring Road I (Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway) to Wasa Junction—Wike revealed that all new roads in satellite towns will, for the first time, be equipped with solar-powered street lighting.

Minister Wike explained that the road expansion is essential to reduce traffic congestion and stimulate local commerce. He expressed satisfaction with the pace and standard of the ongoing work, noting that the road would extend from Ring Road I to Ring Road II to address traffic challenges. Additionally, a new six-lane section leading to Lokogoma is planned, which Wike projects will decrease traffic congestion by around 95%.

He also addressed potential delays due to encroachment by the Apo Mechanic Village, a well-known area for spare parts sales, stating that the project would not be hindered. The relevant committee is actively working on a solution, and Wike emphasized that clearing this area serves the public interest and benefits everyone, not just specific individuals.

Key Points:

  1. Extensive Road Expansion: Road networks across FCT will be improved, connecting both urban and satellite areas.
  2. Innovative Solar Lighting: All new roads in satellite towns will feature eco-friendly solar street lights, a first for these areas.
  3. Reduced Traffic Congestion: Planned expansions, including a six-lane addition to Lokogoma, are expected to cut traffic by 95%.
  4. Positive Project Progress: Wike commended the quality and speed of the current work on the expressway.
  5. Resolving Encroachment Issues: Efforts to address land use conflicts with the Apo Mechanic Village are underway to keep the project on track.

Implications:

  • Economic Development: Enhanced road networks will likely support business growth and economic activity across the FCT.
  • Sustainable Lighting Solutions: The adoption of solar-powered street lights promotes renewable energy use, reducing dependency on the grid.
  • Efficient Traffic Flow: Significant traffic reduction will improve daily commute times and overall transit efficiency.
  • Community Benefit: Clearing encroachments ensures the smooth progression of the project, ultimately benefiting the wider community.
