The Permanent Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, Mrs. Chinwe Joy Okeke, accompanied by the Head of Administration, Hajjiya Rakkiya Ibrahim, conducted an official familiarization visit to the FCT Department of Higher Education (DHE) today.
The Director of the DHE, Mr. Siyanbola O.O., warmly welcomed the delegation, expressing his appreciation for the commitment shown by the Permanent Secretary and her team and thanking the DHE staff for their support in receiving the visitors.
During discussions, Mr. Siyanbola provided a comprehensive overview of the challenges currently faced by the department. He cited issues related to lack of regular staff training, logistical shortfalls as some of the main barriers to the department’s objectives.
Additionally, Mr. Amos Dansofo, Head of Polytechnics, emphasized concerns regarding delays in the promotion of Deputy Directors, which he described as a source of frustration and an impediment to professional growth within the system. Mr. Siyanbola further outlined the department’s vision and mission, highlighting achievements made since his appointment and affirming his commitment to raising educational standards across the FCT.
In her response, Mrs. Okeke acknowledged the concerns raised and shed more light on the effort already in place in addressing some of the noted challenges, she also reminded everyone that the commission is new and they are working hard in many sure things fall into place within a short time.
She further urged the DHE to compile a detailed report on the current status of higher institutions in the FCT.
She emphasized the importance of high standards in education, underscoring the need for well-equipped, safe learning environments that do not compromise student welfare due to facility limitations or underqualified teaching personnel.
Mrs. Okeke reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the quality of higher education and noted the role that adequately maintained institutions play in student success and community growth. Mrs Okeke also recognized how crowded the meeting venue was and stated the need for a bigger facility for the department.
After the meeting, the Permanent Secretary conducted a brief tour of different divisions of the department and the DHE facilities and before her departure.
The familiarization visit underscored both the commitment of the FCT Education Secretariat to support the Department of Higher Education and the pressing needs facing the department.
Mrs. Okeke’s request for a comprehensive report on higher education institutions across the FCT reflects a proactive approach to addressing these challenges. Her emphasis on safe, well-resourced environments for students and staff highlights the Secretariat’s dedication to improving education standards.
The visit concluded with optimism for future enhancements, as the Permanent Secretary’s insights are expected to inform strategic planning and resource allocation aimed at strengthening the department of higher education.
