Members of the House of Representatives have consented to reduce their wages by 50 percent for six months as a demonstration of their unity and selflessness to support the economic difficulties and hunger Nigerians are presently facing.
This decision came after the acceptance of an amendment to a motion’s proposal put forward by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, regarding the necessity for legislators to forfeit 50% of their N600,000 monthly earnings to aid Nigerians in light of the prevailing hardship in the country.
Kalu’s amended proposition was attached to a motion by Representative Isiaka Ayokunle, urging those advocating for the planned nationwide demonstrations to abandon the notion and instead engage in dialogue with the government.
The Deputy Speaker indicated that the salary reduction is intended to bolster the federal government’s initiatives to address the escalating cost of food items across the nation, aiming to mitigate the difficulties Nigerians are experiencing.
According to Daily Trust, by cutting their salaries by 30%, the 360 legislators will be contributing N108 million monthly for the next six months.
The motion was approved and forwarded to the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for implementation.
