Lawmakers summon FCTA, Army and affected residents over controversial demolition exercise in Abuja community
The House of Representatives has given the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) until September 28, 2026, to explain the circumstances surrounding the demolition of properties in Tungamaje, Abuja, by personnel of the Nigerian Army.
The directive followed concerns raised over the demolition exercise and its impact on residents and property owners in the community.
The House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory is seeking clarification from the relevant authorities on the ownership and status of the disputed land, as well as the circumstances that led to the demolition of the affected properties.
The FCTA and other relevant authorities are expected to appear before the lawmakers and provide details on the matter, including whether due process was followed before the demolitions were carried out.
Residents of Tungamaje have reportedly expressed concerns over the destruction of their properties and have called for government intervention to address the dispute.
The legislative intervention is expected to provide an opportunity for the affected residents, the FCTA and other parties involved to present their positions on the land dispute.
The September 28 deadline will allow the House committee to receive the FCTA’s explanation and determine the appropriate next steps on the matter.
