INEC meets with PDP factions leaders

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday, 19th December 2025, held an interactive session with leaders of different factions within PDP the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as part of efforts to enforce compliance with the Constitution, Electoral Act and internal regulations ahead of upcoming elections.

Speaking at the meeting, INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, said the engagement became necessary following a series of correspondences received from opposing interests within the party requesting the Commission’s intervention on several issues.

He noted that INEC is constitutionally empowered to monitor political parties in addition to conducting elections, adding that these responsibilities form the basis of its actions, decisions and oversight functions.

Professor Amupitan reminded party stakeholders that the Commission had already released its timetable and schedule of activities for forthcoming elections, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election scheduled for 21 February 2026. He stressed that early engagement was vital to ensuring smooth participation and compliance with electoral procedures.

According to him, the meeting was convened to provide space for open, constructive dialogue, especially in light of conflicting correspondence from PDP factions, with the goal of finding clarity and fostering unity ahead of the polls.

He assured participants that INEC would remain firmly guided by the Constitution, Electoral Act, and its internal guidelines — the core legal frameworks that govern its operations.

Professor Amupitan further reiterated the Commission’s commitment to upholding transparency, integrity and strict legal compliance throughout the electoral process.

He thanked party officials for honouring the invitation and expressed hope that the interaction would help resolve pending concerns and strengthen coordination before the elections.
