INEC Warns ADC Against Convention, Says Defying Court Order Could Lead to Disqualification

Electoral body refuses to recognise party factions, insists on strict compliance with court ruling amid leadership crisis

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a strong warning to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), cautioning the party against proceeding with its planned national convention in violation of an existing court order.

INEC stated that any action taken by the party that contravenes judicial directives could attract serious consequences, including possible disqualification or non-recognition of outcomes from such a convention.

The warning comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, with factions laying claim to the party’s national structure. The dispute, which has already reached the Court of Appeal, prompted a directive maintaining the status quo pending the determination of the case.

In response, INEC emphasized that it is bound by law to strictly adhere to court orders and will not take any step that could undermine the judicial process. The commission made it clear that it will not monitor, supervise, or recognise any convention conducted in defiance of the court ruling.

The electoral body further noted that, for now, it does not recognise any faction within the party until the legal issues are fully resolved.

The development signals a deepening crisis within the ADC, raising concerns over the party’s stability and its preparedness for future electoral activities, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers say the situation underscores the importance of internal party cohesion and respect for the rule of law in Nigeria’s democratic process.

As the legal battle continues, all eyes remain on the ADC leadership and how it navigates the growing pressure from both the courts and the electoral umpire.
