Former Kano Governor and 2023 Presidential Candidate Kwankwaso cites shifting political landscape, hints at move to a new platform for national transformation

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and 2023 Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has formally announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.

In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso said his decision followed careful consideration of Nigeria’s evolving political environment, which he noted requires strategic realignment in order to achieve meaningful national change.

He described his exit from the NNPP as a difficult but necessary step, having served as the party’s National Leader and flagbearer in the 2023 general elections. He expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to the party’s growth and national political discourse.

Kwankwaso extended gratitude to the NNPP National Chairman, , the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and the National Executive Committee for their support and cooperation during his time in the party.

He also acknowledged party leaders at all levels — from ward to state — as well as legacy members and supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their loyalty and dedication to the party’s vision.

The former governor emphasized that his next political steps would be guided by the need to align with a platform capable of delivering effective governance and a more prosperous future for Nigerians.
