LUTH Nursing Director Accused of Forcing Nurses to Pay ₦5,000–₦10,000, Funds Allegedly Used for Birthday

LUTH

Nurses at LUTH allege retirement funds misused amid policy delays.

Lagos — The Nursing Director at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) is facing allegations of compelling nurses to contribute between ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 each under the guise of funding their retirement benefits.

According to affected staff, the contributions were collected over time but were allegedly diverted to cover the director’s personal birthday celebration, rather than being set aside for retirement.

The controversy comes amid delays in the hospital’s retirement policy implementation, leaving nurses frustrated and questioning the transparency of fund management. Nurses claim they had no choice but to make the contributions and are now demanding explanations and accountability.

Healthcare worker advocates say such incidents reflect broader challenges in Nigerian health institutions, where staff welfare and delayed benefits remain persistent issues.

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital administration has yet to respond to the allegations. Nurses affected by the incident are reportedly considering formal complaints to relevant authorities, including the Nigerian Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) and the Federal Ministry of Health.
