Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term. Her next four-year tenure will commence on September 1, 2025.

In a statement released by the WTO, Okonjo-Iweala expressed deep gratitude to the WTO General Council and its 166 member nations for their continued trust and support. She highlighted the organization’s critical role in tackling global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and economic uncertainties, during her first term.

Okonjo-Iweala pledged to continue promoting trade as a key driver of economic growth and resilience while advocating for a more inclusive and equitable multilateral trading system.

She made history in 2021 as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO, further solidifying her reputation as a trailblazer on the global stage.
