Nigerian Police Inspector Detained by DIA Over Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu

Investigation into alleged coup plot expands as police and military officers face detention in Abuja.

Abuja – A Nigerian Police inspector, Ahmed Ibrahim from Taraba State, has been detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) over an alleged coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His arrest follows intelligence obtained from previously detained military officers implicated in the same case.

Ibrahim is reportedly the first police officer among 36 security personnel (35 military officers and 1 police officer) held in connection with the investigation. Concerns have been raised about detention conditions and limited access for families and legal counsel.

The Nigerian military confirmed that officers detained since October 2025 were under investigation for alleged breaches of discipline, with some reportedly linked to an attempt to undermine the government. Those with credible allegations are expected to face trial before military judicial panels.

The case has fueled public discussion about security sector loyalty and political stability in Nigeria, prompting calls from civil society groups for transparency and strict adherence to due process. Authorities have urged Nigerians to await official statements while assuring that the situation is being handled according to legal and constitutional provisions.
