National Population Commission chairman reportedly dies after brief illness, with details of his death and funeral arrangements still awaited.
The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf Talban Wushishi, has died barely eight months after assuming office.
Wushishi reportedly died on Friday, August 28, 2026, following a brief illness. His death was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, who said the NPC chairman died after a brief illness.
The news of his death reportedly reached Minna, Niger State, around the time of the Juma’at prayer, throwing his associates, political allies and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state into mourning.
Wushishi, a former Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the PDP, was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and officially assumed office as NPC Chairman on December 2, 2025.
As head of the commission, he oversaw matters relating to population data, census activities and civil registration, which are vital to national planning and development.
His death comes at a significant period for the commission, which has been implementing reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s civil registration and vital statistics system, including the expansion of digital birth and death registration.
The Digital Rector of Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, Amb. Ibrahim Umar Kontagora, described Wushishi’s death as a painful loss to the Kontagora Emirate, Niger State and Nigeria, while extending condolences to his family, colleagues and associates.
