Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has alleged that officers of the Nigeria Police Force violently re-arrested Omoyele Sowore, the convener of RevolutionNow Movement, shortly after a magistrate court in Kuje granted him bail.
Adeyanju, who was present at the court, described the scene as chaotic, revealing that Sowore was attacked by over 50 police officers.“While we were conferring with him just here, he was violently attacked by the police.
More than 50 police officers violently attacked him and took him again by force,” Adeyanju said.According to Adeyanju, the police claimed to possess a fresh remand order, despite the court’s earlier ruling granting Sowore and others bail. The development comes amid growing concerns over police handling of peaceful protesters and the continued clampdown on civic activists in the Federal Capital Territory.
Sowore, along with Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer and other activists, was earlier arrested during a peaceful demonstration in Abuja on Wednesday. As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the police authorities regarding the alleged forceful re-arrest.
