Says Abuja Security Sources Warned Him of Alleged elimination Threat
Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has claimed that he has been marked for elimination by a Boko Haram figure, citing what he described as credible security sources in Abuja.
According to Sheikh Gumi, he received information from individuals within Nigeria’s security circles that his name was allegedly mentioned during a high-level security discussion as a potential target. He said the revelation came as a shock and raised serious concerns about his personal safety.
Speaking publicly on the matter, the Kaduna-based cleric explained that the warning suggested that extremist elements now view him as an enemy, despite his long-standing advocacy for dialogue and non-violent engagement in addressing insecurity in northern Nigeria.
Sheikh Gumi has been a controversial voice in Nigeria’s security discourse, particularly due to his past involvement in discussions aimed at persuading armed groups to embrace peace. While supporters argue that his approach seeks to reduce bloodshed, critics have often accused him of legitimising criminal groups.
In his remarks, Gumi also linked the rise of Boko Haram to foreign interference, blaming global powers—particularly the United States—for contributing to instability in the region. He further criticised Nigeria’s political and religious leadership, accusing them of failing to tackle the root causes of insecurity, poverty, and social injustice.
As of the time of filing this report, no official confirmation has been issued by Nigerian security agencies regarding Sheikh Gumi’s claims. Authorities have also not publicly acknowledged the existence of any threat list involving the cleric.
The development adds to ongoing national conversations around terrorism, clerics’ roles in peacebuilding, and the safety of public figures involved in sensitive security engagements.
