Two Rivers Lawmakers Withdraw From Governor Fubara’s Impeachment, Call For Peaceful Resolution
Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their support for the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, appealing instead for dialogue and a peaceful political resolution to the crisis rocking the state.
The two lawmakers, Hon. Sylvanus Enyi Nwankwo and Hon. Peter Abi, announced their decision during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, distancing themselves from moves to remove the governor and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.
They urged their colleagues in the Assembly to “temper justice with mercy”, warning that impeachment should not be the first option in resolving political disagreements, especially given the fragile situation in Rivers State.
According to the lawmakers, their decision followed extensive consultations and appeals from respected elders, political leaders, and stakeholders within and outside the state, all of whom have expressed concern over the rising political tension.
While acknowledging that constitutional issues have been raised against the governor, the legislators maintained that dialogue, reconciliation, and strict adherence to democratic principles would better serve the interest of Rivers people than a prolonged political confrontation.
They also called on Governor Fubara to take deliberate steps to avoid further constitutional breaches and to embrace peace in order to stabilise governance in the oil-rich state.
The withdrawal of the two lawmakers comes amid mounting pressure on the Rivers State House of Assembly to halt the impeachment process, as civil society groups, regional leaders, and concerned citizens continue to advocate for calm and political compromise.
Rivers State has witnessed months of political instability linked to power struggles within the state’s political leadership, raising fears of governance paralysis if the crisis is not urgently resolved
