FCT Minister links his continued stay in office to delivering electoral support for President Tinubu in the FCT and Rivers State
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to win the 2027 presidential election in both the FCT and Rivers State.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, while speaking to leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.
The FCT Minister said his continued stay in President Tinubu’s cabinet would be tied to his ability to deliver electoral results in the FCT and Rivers State.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said, stressing that he would take responsibility for the outcome.
According to the minister, if President Tinubu loses the FCT and Rivers State at the presidential election, he will announce his resignation on January 17, 2027, a day after the election.
“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
Wike also disclosed that a multi-party political coalition is being assembled in the FCT ahead of the 2027 elections. He said the coalition would work across political parties to support candidates for various elective positions.
While outlining the political direction of the coalition, Wike expressed support for President Tinubu for the presidency and named former FCT Senator Philip Aduda among those being backed for the Senate.
“Let us be clear on direction: for the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu! For the Senate, Philip Aduda is a man of the people,” Wike said.
The minister added that two House of Representatives candidates, whom he described as former Area Council chairmen, were also part of the coalition’s preferred candidates.
The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for Saturday, January 16, 2027.
Wike’s declaration comes against the backdrop of ongoing efforts by the FCT Administration to address the relocation and land-allocation concerns involving traders and mechanics operating around the Apo Mechanic Village corridor.
The minister’s remarks have placed his political mobilisation efforts in the FCT and Rivers State under heightened public attention as the 2027 electoral season approaches.
