From roads and bridges to water, agriculture, youth empowerment and workers’ welfare, the Bwari administration highlights its early interventions across the 10 wards.
The first 100 days of Hon. Joshua Musa Ishaku as Executive Chairman of Bwari Area Council have been defined by an emphasis on listening to residents, responding to urgent community needs and taking practical steps to address some of the challenges confronting communities across the Area Council.
From infrastructure and workers’ welfare to agriculture, youth development, education and basic services, the administration has begun translating its priorities into interventions across the 10 wards.
One notable feature of the administration has been its willingness to listen to residents and engage with community groups, civil society organisations and youth stakeholders. The Chairman has repeatedly maintained that development must be people-centred and that the concerns raised by residents should inform government action.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS AND INTERVENTIONS
1. Road Infrastructure
- Construction and commissioning of the Dutsepe–Sokale Road in Dutse Ward.
- Construction and commissioning of the Dugbadna Bridge, linking the old Bwari Road from the NNPC axis to the new Bwari Road around Assie Hotel Junction.
- Construction and rehabilitation interventions in communities including Zango in Kuduru Ward.
2. Water Supply
- Commissioning of a 40,000-litre solar-powered borehole at Dutsepe, provided through the Lions Club, during the administration’s first week in office.
3. Agriculture and Food Security
- Procurement of 1,800 bags of NPK 15-15-15 fertiliser for distribution to farmers across Bwari’s 10 wards.
- Commitment to provide tractors and other agricultural implements to improve productivity.
- Encouragement of wet- and dry-season farming as part of efforts to strengthen food production.
4. Workers’ Welfare The administration inherited outstanding obligations to council workers and has commenced efforts to address them, while also proposing recognition and reward for outstanding workers.
5. Youth Empowerment
- Training and graduation of 50 professionally trained fashion designers through an empowerment programme.
- Support for young people to acquire filmmaking skills through collaboration with Abuja Film Village.
- Continued emphasis on skills acquisition, employment and practical opportunities for young people.
6. Education and Student Support
- Support for vulnerable students through payment of WAEC and NECO fees.
- Financial support to the Student Association of Bwari Area Council (SABAC).
- Continued engagement on education and human-capital development.
7. Community Security
- Rehabilitation of the police outpost in Kawu Ward following concerns raised by residents.
8. Renovation of Council Facilities The administration also renovated key facilities at the Bwari Area Council Secretariat, including:
- The Chairman’s Office
- The Area Council Chamber
- The Vice Chairman’s Office
9. Smart Toilets and Sanitation The administration has initiated plans to provide at least 10 smart toilets in each political ward, as part of its response to sanitation and basic-service needs.
10. Women and Skills Development The Chairman directed the Works Department to commence work on the Women Development Centre in Kuduru, with the objective of restoring the facility for skills acquisition and ICT-related development.
Beyond physical projects, one of the defining features of the first 100 days has been stakeholder engagement.
The administration has engaged residents, youth organisations and civil society groups, including the Bwari Youth ThinkTank Initiative, which presented recommendations on education, employment, skills acquisition and sustainable development. The Chairman welcomed the engagement and assured the group that its recommendations would receive consideration.
The administration has also engaged with the Bwari Residents’ Charter of Demand on Urban Development, reflecting growing efforts to incorporate residents’ concerns into development planning.
For an Area Council as large and diverse as Bwari, the needs are enormous and no administration can address every challenge within 100 days. Roads, drainage, water, healthcare, education, sanitation, employment and other basic services remain areas requiring sustained attention.
What stands out from the first 100 days is the stated approach: listen to the people, identify urgent needs, engage stakeholders and begin taking action.
As the administration moves into its next phase, the expectations of residents will naturally grow. The focus will now be on sustaining these interventions, completing ongoing projects and expanding development to more communities across the ten wards.
The first 100 days are only the beginning, but for Hon. Joshua Musa Ishaku, they have provided an opportunity to establish a direction centred on service, responsiveness and grassroots development.
