Former Kano Governor Kwankwaso Says National Interest More Important Than Personal Ambition

Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared his willingness to accept the vice-presidential ticket to Labour Party’s Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections, signalling a possible major opposition alliance.
Kwankwaso made the declaration while speaking on the ongoing political realignments and coalition talks ahead of the next election cycle, stating that he is open to either the presidential or vice-presidential position if it will strengthen opposition unity and rescue Nigeria from its current challenges.
According to the former Governor, the 2027 elections will require sacrifice, compromise, and strategic alliances, adding that personal ambition must give way to national interest.
“If the arrangement is for me to be vice president, I will accept it. What matters is building a strong platform capable of rescuing Nigeria,” Kwankwaso reportedly said.
His remarks have fueled speculation about a potential Peter Obi–Kwankwaso ticket, a combination many political analysts believe could significantly challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, remains one of the most popular opposition figures in Nigeria, particularly among youths and urban voters. Kwankwaso, on the other hand, commands massive grassroots support across northern Nigeria through the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Observers believe that an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance could bridge Nigeria’s regional and religious divides, creating a formidable national coalition ahead of 2027.
The former governor also confirmed that talks are ongoing among opposition leaders, including discussions on party platforms, zoning arrangements, and power-sharing formulas.
However, neither Peter Obi nor the Labour Party has officially confirmed the alliance, as negotiations remain at a preliminary stage.
Kwankwaso’s statement has continued to generate mixed reactions within Nigeria’s political space. While supporters view it as a sign of maturity and patriotism, critics argue that concrete agreements have not yet been reached.
As 2027 approaches, Nigerians are closely watching how opposition forces align and whether the much-anticipated Obi–Kwankwaso ticket will materialise.
