Nigerian Nurses Forum Raises Alarm Over Alleged Quack Nursing Practice in Ogun

The Nigerian Nurses Forum has strongly condemned the alleged parade and presentation of unqualified individuals as nurses at a private health facility in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, describing the act as a serious threat to public safety and the integrity of the nursing profession.

The group, reacting to reports that Elshaddai Clinic allegedly trained and publicly presented uncertified persons as nurses, described the exercise as illegal, dangerous, and deceptive, warning that such practices could lead to loss of lives.

“This Is Quackery, Not Skill Acquisition” – Nurses Forum

In a statement, the forum dismissed claims that the exercise was a form of skill acquisition or healthcare innovation, insisting that nursing is a regulated profession that requires formal education, certification, and licensing by the appropriate authorities.

According to the group, allowing untrained individuals to practice nursing exposes patients to medical errors, complications, permanent disability, and possible death, especially in emergency situations.

Accusations Against Ogun State Health Authorities

The nurses’ forum also accused the Ogun State Ministry of Health of regulatory failure, alleging negligence or complicity in allowing the clinic to operate an illegal nursing programme without sanction.

The group further criticized the Ogun State Government, stating that weak enforcement of healthcare regulations has encouraged the rise of quackery within the state’s health sector.

Forum Demands Immediate Action

The Nigerian Nurses Forum issued several demands, including:

  • Immediate shutdown of the alleged illegal nursing training programme
  • Arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in training and parading unqualified nurses
  • Public identification and withdrawal of all illegally trained persons from clinical practice
  • Investigation and sanctioning of any government officials found complicit
  • A clear public response from the Ogun State Government on steps to curb health sector quackery

Call to Protect Public Health

The forum emphasized that protecting the integrity of the nursing profession is crucial to safeguarding public health, warning that failure to act decisively could further erode trust in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

It called on relevant regulatory bodies to urgently intervene and ensure that only properly trained and licensed professionals are allowed to practice nursing in Nigeria.
