Nigeria Police find no credible evidence against former senator but recommend court review to ensure legal clarity and public trust.
The Nigeria Police Force has cleared former Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbo of allegations that he raped a 13-year-old girl, following a detailed investigation involving multiple police units. While Abbo has been cleared due to lack of credible evidence, the police have recommended that the case undergo court review to ensure legal clarity and satisfy public concern
The allegation was first reported in June 2025, when Mrs. Zainab Mohammed accused Abbo of raping her daughter, Khadija Mohammed, at his residence in Katampe Extension, Abuja. The case sparked nationwide attention, drawing reactions from civil society groups, legal analysts, and the public.
Police Investigation Findings
- Investigations involved the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Gender Unit, National Cybercrime Centre, Intelligence Tactical Unit, and Medical Unit.
- Police noted delays in reporting and collecting evidence, which hindered their ability to establish the offense conclusively.
- A medical report from July 2025 indicated no breach of the victim’s hymen, and searches of the alleged scene in October 2025 found no incriminating evidence.
- Witnesses present at the time did not corroborate the allegations, according to the investigation.
Despite the clearance, the police advised that the case file be forwarded to court for review, suggesting that judicial proceedings may be necessary to ensure transparency and public trust in the process.
Abbo has consistently denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated. Legal experts have emphasized the importance of monitoring the case to protect children’s rights and uphold justice.
