Kaduna Governor fulfils promise to Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic football heroes three decades after historic gold medal triumph

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has fulfilled a long-standing promise to members of Nigeria’s historic 1996 Olympic gold-winning football team by approving land allocations and street naming in their honour.

The gesture, announced as Nigeria marks 30 years since the famous Atlanta ’96 triumph, includes Kaduna-born football legends Daniel Amokachi and Celestine Babayaro, who were part of the squad that made history by winning Nigeria’s first Olympic football gold medal.

The “Dream Team” defeated Argentina 3–2 in a dramatic final in Atlanta, completing a remarkable campaign that saw Nigeria overcome some of the world’s strongest footballing nations.

Babayaro, while expressing appreciation for Governor Uba Sani’s intervention, recalled that the players had been promised plots of land and streets named after them following their historic achievement three decades ago.

He noted that the promises had remained unfulfilled until the Kaduna State Government took steps to honour the former footballers.

“It is 30 years today, we still haven’t seen it, but by the special grace of God, His Excellency has approved everything for us today,” Babayaro said.

Amokachi, popularly known as “The Bull,” was also a key member of the victorious squad and had established himself as one of Nigeria’s leading footballers through his successful career in Europe.

Babayaro similarly went on to enjoy an accomplished career in European football after the Olympic triumph.

The Kaduna State Government’s decision is expected to provide lasting recognition for the former footballers while preserving the memory of the historic achievement and celebrating their contribution to Nigeria’s sporting heritage.

The Atlanta ’96 triumph remains one of the defining moments in Nigerian sports history, as the Dream Team became the first African men’s football team to win an Olympic gold medal.
