Deadly attack on road construction site raises fresh security concerns in borno state Nigeria
Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have reportedly killed scores of construction workers in a deadly attack on a community in Borno State, once again drawing attention to the persistent insecurity in Nigeria’s North-East region.
According to Sahara Reporters, the attackers stormed a road construction site where workers were carrying out their duties and opened fire, killing many on the spot. The victims were said to be mainly labourers and site workers engaged in an ongoing infrastructure project meant to improve road connectivity in the area.
Eyewitnesses and local sources described the incident as a coordinated assault, with the armed militants overpowering the area before escaping. Although the exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed, community members said the death toll is high, leaving families and colleagues of the victims in deep mourning.
The attack has sparked renewed fear among residents and raised serious concerns about the safety of civilian workers involved in public infrastructure projects in conflict-affected areas. It also underscores the ongoing threat posed by insurgent groups despite repeated claims of progress in the fight against terrorism in the region.
Borno State remains one of the states most affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, with civilians, security personnel, and development projects frequently targeted. As of the time of reporting, security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while residents are calling for increased security presence and better protection for workers contributing to rebuilding efforts in the North-East.
