League of Imams, Alfas announce date as Muslims prepare for 2026 Ramadan
Islamic leaders in Nigeria have fixed Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the commencement date for the Ramadan fast.
The announcement was made by the League of Imams and Alfas after consultations and reliance on astronomical calculations in line with internationally accepted Islamic scholarly guidelines on the lunar calendar.
According to the Islamic body, the crescent moon signaling the beginning of the holy month is expected to be sighted on February 17, making February 18 the first day of fasting for Muslims observing the decision.
The leaders urged Muslim faithful to use the Ramadan period to intensify prayers for peace, unity, and national stability, while emphasizing discipline, charity, and compassion for the less privileged.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a period of fasting from dawn to sunset, spiritual reflection, and increased devotion, and it ends with the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.
