Fresh report reveals key cabinet members preparing to step down to contest governorship and other positions amid legal requirements and presidential directive

Fresh political realignments are unfolding within the federal cabinet as several ministers under President are reportedly preparing to resign ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development comes amid growing consultations and strategic alignments by top government officials believed to be nursing ambitions to contest for elective positions, particularly governorship seats across their respective states.

Among those linked to possible resignation are Adebayo Adelabu (Minister of Power), Muhammad Ali Pate (Minister of Health and Social Welfare), Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (Minister of Foreign Affairs), and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha (Minister of State for Labour).

Sources indicate that the expected resignations are in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, which require political appointees to step down from their positions before participating in party primaries, whether as aspirants or delegates.

It was further gathered that President Tinubu has directed all political appointees with ambitions to contest in the 2027 elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026. The directive is said to extend beyond ministers to include presidential aides and heads of government agencies.

The move is expected to trigger a cabinet reshuffle in the coming weeks as affected officials formally exit their roles to pursue their political aspirations, signaling the early wave of political maneuvering ahead of the next general elections.
