Healthcare professionals urge the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to reverse the compulsory fee, citing financial hardship and lack of visible benefits.
Nigerian nurses have called for an immediate review of the ₦40,000 mandatory professional training fee imposed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), describing it as an undue financial burden that has failed to improve the quality of professional training.
The nurses said findings from a survey conducted among practitioners indicated that the compulsory fee has not translated into better training outcomes or enhanced professional development, despite the significant cost to healthcare workers.
They maintained that while continuous professional education is essential for maintaining high standards of nursing practice, the current fee is unaffordable for many practitioners, especially amid rising living costs and economic challenges.
The nurses urged the NMCN to review the policy, reduce the financial burden on members, and ensure that professional development programmes are transparent, accessible, and focused on improving healthcare delivery rather than imposing additional costs on nurses.
