The Mexican government has granted diplomatic approval for Omokri’s appointment, paving the way for his representation of Nigeria in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Mexico has formally approved the appointment of former presidential aide and political commentator, Reno Omokri, as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the North American country.
The approval, known as agrément, was communicated to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, ending months of uncertainty surrounding Omokri’s diplomatic posting.
According to reports by The Guardian Nigeria and First Weekly Magazine, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Nigeria, José Manuel Briseño Flores, delivered the diplomatic approval to the Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.
The approval also covers Omokri’s concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, meaning he is expected to represent Nigeria in four countries under the ambassadorial assignment.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved Omokri’s deployment to Mexico City on March 6, 2026, as part of the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to various Nigerian diplomatic missions.
His nomination followed his selection by the President in November 2025 and subsequent confirmation by the Nigerian Senate in December of the same year.
However, the completion of his diplomatic posting remained uncertain because Mexico had yet to formally communicate its acceptance of his nomination.
In August 2026, the Federal Government disclosed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries whose diplomatic approvals were still outstanding for Nigerian ambassador-designates.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had stated that Nigeria was engaging the relevant countries and expressed confidence that the outstanding approvals would be communicated in due course.
The delay in securing Mexico’s approval generated public discussion, with reports emerging in March 2026 that a Nigerian diaspora group had petitioned Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum over Omokri’s nomination.
However, there was no official confirmation at the time that the Mexican government had rejected his appointment.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June 2026, Omokri dismissed speculation that Mexico had rejected him, attributing the delay to diplomatic procedures and other administrative considerations.
The latest development confirms Mexico’s formal acceptance of his nomination.
The granting of agrément is an important stage in the appointment of an ambassador, signifying that the receiving country has consented to accept the nominee as a diplomatic representative of the sending country.
However, the approval does not automatically mean that the ambassador has formally assumed office. Omokri is still expected to complete the remaining diplomatic procedures, including presenting his credentials to the Mexican president, before formally commencing his duties.
Before his ambassadorial appointment, Omokri served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and became widely known for his political commentary, public advocacy and engagement on national issues.
His diplomatic assignment is expected to provide an opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its bilateral relations with Mexico and deepen engagement with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
